Fitzroy was named after Captain Robert Fitzroy who surveyed the Falkland Islands between 1828 and 1836 aboard HMS Beagle.
It is now a quiet settlement forming part of the Falkland Landholdings Corporation with a 35 acre horticulture project that supplies a significant proportion of the vegetables for Stanley.
