Lews Castle was built in the mid 19th century by then landowner Sir James Matheson. It was a college until the 1980s, when its deterioration made it unsafe. Refurbishment is currently (March 2014) in progress, and discussions are on-going to convert into a museum and archive centre, with hotel and other forms of accommodation on the upper floors.

At time of this edit, Lews Castle is NOT open to the public.
