Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, born on 27th of February 1807 in Portland, Maine, now part of Massachusetts, passed away on 24th of March 1882 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, American author, writer of lyrics, dramas and translator.

In memory of Longfellow, there is an inscription on a fountain on the "Bells of Geisenheim".

Photo and history of the fountain will follow.

The Bells of Geisenheim

What bells are those, that ring so slow,
So mellow, musical, and low?
They are the bells of Geisenheim,
That with their melancholy chime
Ring out the curfew of the sun.

The poem was translated by Ferdinand Freiligrath from the original American version into German:

Die Glocken von Geisenheim

Was für ein Läuten mag das sein,
es klingt so mild, so tief und rein?
Das ist zum Sonnenuntergang,
voll Wehmut, dass der Tag versank,
der Glockenklang von Geisenheim.
