castle, UNESCO World Heritage Site, 18th century construction
The Electors’ Palace in Koblenz was built from 1771, designed by Michael d’Ixnard. It was completed in 1786. The grand Neo-Classical building was occupied at first by the last of Trier’s electors, Clemens Wenzeslaus von Sachsen. Future Emperor Wilhelm I also lived here between 1850 and 1857. In World War 2 the palace was damaged, but later reconstructed to its original design. Today it is the location of various federal agencies. Since 2002, the Electoral Palace is part of the World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, acknowledged by UNESCO.
