The western walls in the Blachernai quarter were rebuilt by Emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1143-1180). They stretch from the so-called Tekfur Saray to the Walls of Isaac Angelos, for a distance of some 220 m, and are fortified with nine U-shaped towers.
