Originally built in 1903 for Charles J. Martin, who served for many years as the secretary and treasurer of the Washburn-Crosby Company, a predecessor of General Mills. The house was designed by prominent Minneapolis architect William Channing Whitney in the Renaissance Revival style, which was popular for large urban residences at the beginning of the 20th century.

Presently owned by Robert "Bob" M. Levine, an attorney (currently inactive) and son of the late George and Marion Levine, who founded Penny's Super Markets and grew the family-run operation to 27 stores. After George died, Marion and her son made shrewd business and real estate investments. Gloria Finley & Bob Levine have hosted political fundraisers at their home for Al Franken.
