uma maheshwaram

India / Andhra Pradesh / Srisailam /

The Northern Gateway to Srisaila "Mahaa Kshetram" ( A 'Major' Shrine with eight 'Minor' shrines as its gateways in all the eight directions just as a Shri-Chakra has eight gateways. Srisailam is the only such MahaaKshetram in India, not even Benares or Kailash)
Uma (Paarvati) did penance here, at "PaapaNaashanam", in order to get Shiva as her consort. There is an ancient tunnel-way allegedly leading to Kaashi, Rameshwaram via Srisailam. This tunnel opens at its other end probably at "Akka MahaaDevi Guhalu". Waterfall here is gradually dying out..during the last decade the amount of water-flow dwindled greatly. Lord ShriRama, according to Ramayana, started his "[Shri]Giri Pradakshinam" from this very place. There are ancient pathways leading to Mannanur ("Munipuram") and also via Loddi Mallaiah to Sailesvaram. One has to get down at Rangapur Bus-stop, on the way to mannanur from Acchampeta (nearest ATM, Hotel and Hospital)
