office building, skyscraper, 1983_construction
396-foot, 32-story postmodern office building completed in 1983. Designed by Fox & Fowle Architects, it is clad in light tan brick and glass. The tower has a 5-story base on the Broadway side, with a double-height atrium entrance at the north end that is deeply recessed, and set within a glass wall. A dark marble wall forms the north end of the bottom two floors. The south end of the ground floor is less deeply recessed. Above, the 2nd floor is aligned with the building line at the south end, but curves back to the deeply recessed entry at the northern half. Shiny, round stainless steel columns support the 2nd floor. The top three floors of the base have plain tan brick spandrels alternating with horizontal bands of reflective-glass windows.
Above this base, there is a setback at the north end to a series of four serrated-edge corners, giving the upper floors a sort-of sawtooth pattern, allowing numerous corner offices on each floor. The upper floors are clad in the same manner as below, with alternating bands of tan brick and glass.
On the Trinity Place elevation, the ground floor is somewhat recessed, with four rounded brick-clad columns supporting the upper floors. The columns are visible on the interior of the glassed-in, double-height 2nd floor. The other three floors of the base (there are six in total on this elevation, since the site slopes downward to the west), and the rest of the set-back tower, follow the pattern of the Broadway facade, except with only three corner edges instead of four. The ground floor on this side has a small rear entrance, Bravo Pizza & Deli in the center bay, and a parking garage entrance at the southern bay. Inside is a dramatic 6-story atrium with 80-foot waterfall and reflective pool.
