Many of the Tsugaru clan that were sent to the Soya area died of various diseases due to the severe cold such as chronic swelling and bloating. It was said that coffee showed good results in helping to prevent or cure this bloating because coffee is a diuretic, and was issued to the soldiers by the shogunate leaders. However, many unfortunate soldiers who did not have the opportunity to drink the coffee lost their lives. The monument was built in memory of these unfortunate soldiers.
