Onuma Lake

Japan / Hokkaido / Makubetsu /

"Oonuma" means "marsh", since the lake's shores are mostly marshland. The lake is 10 km around and 1,5 m deep at the maximum. Every spring and fall about 5,000 whistling swans come here; all in all, there are over 100 kinds of wild birds which make the place interesting for bird watchers. Seasonal flowers are another attraction.
