Antakalnis Cemetery (Vilnius)

It was established in 1809. Primarily it consisted of 4 parts: hospital (Orthodox), orphan (Catholic), military and First Wold War participants' cemeteries. After the First World War, Polish soldiers' and, supposedly, Lithuanian soldiers' burials appeared.
During Soviet ocupation period, since 1951 a memorial area was created to honour the fallen Soviet Union soldiers of Second World War, also communist political and culture elite burial places were formed.
In 1991, after January 13th Events and Medininkai Massacre, a memorial of Lithuanian Freedom Fighters was created in the southern part of cemetery. The latest part of Antakalnis cemetery is President' Pantheon, where Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas was buried in 2010.
Today Antakalnis Cemetery is one of the biggest and frequently visited burial complex in Vilnius.
