Three royal Chera dynasties(AD 801 - AD 1120) known as Ayes,Venads,and Kulasekaras ruled kerala .The rulers of these dynasties and the other chieftains rulling small regions of rest of the kerala all were generaly reffered to as cheras by the people of Chola and Pandiya countries .During this period (AD 801 - AD 1120 )the nobility amoung the cheras were called CHERAMAN and rulers took title PERUMAL after coronation.The kulasekara dynasty were rulling a region of kerala beyond Kottayam further to north upto kollikkode(calicut)and known as Kudamalai nadu,with their capital at Mahodayapuram(Kodungallur) a sea port city also known as Makothai.
AD 1014 Rajaraja chola captured kodungallur and cheras accepted the Chola supramacy.After AD 1090? 1192 Rama Varma Kulasekara with his powerful chavar (suicide sqads)forces defeted the Kulothtunga Chola -1 and regained full power in kudamalai nadu.This was the end of 100 years of intermittant wars between Cholas and the cheras. Some tamil inscriptions however mentions few more Chola-chera conflicts after Kulothtunga-1 during the period of remaing cholas upto AD 1250
