Originally the Royal Masonic Senior School, the former Bushey International University featured as a location in a number of films and television programmes, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. This is probably due to 1) its imposing aspect and 2) its proximity to Elstree Studios. Certainly the building features in three episodes of the popular 1960s TV show 'The Avengers': 'Death's Door', 'The Cybernauts' (very briefly), and 'A Sense Of History' (as a university building). The old school/university also features as the academic setting for the Boulting Brothers' 1957 film 'Lucky Jim', starring Ian Carmichael (Bushey railway station can also be seen towards the end of that film, particularly the Eastbury Road approach). The 1956 John Mills movie 'It's Great to be Young' also used these buildings for its school setting.

More recently, Martin Shaw's starring vehicle 'Judge John Deed' has been filmed around the college buildings and it was used as a location in the 'Harry Potter' movies.

No longer an educational establishment, and now developed as dwellings for the aspiring.

  • Hello, I was a student there for 2 weeks in July 1998 with an International program for studying English. I met many kids from all over the world and had an amazing experience. It saddens me to see this beautiful site and buildings left to rot. If anyone has more fotos of the site as it is or was, please uplodad them. I am tempted to go visit myself, as I live in London now, but I think it would be really sad indeed to see its state.

I teach at the Amerin School of Kuwait. Went to visit Bushey 3 years ago. The campus has been transformed into luxury apartments. It's beautiful.
