Holcombe Old Church

United Kingdom / England / Chilcompton /

The heart of the abandoned former village of Holcombe (or known locally as Lucombe).
The inhabitants were decimated by the Black Death, which resulted in the village moving to higher ground - where Holcome is now situated.
The link with Scott of the Antarctic is summarised in the history of the brewery less than a mile to the south, while the connection with the Black Death is recalled by the renaming of the former Holcome Inn to the 'Ring 'o Roses' some years ago. This pub is located just outsde the village centre towards Stratton on the Fosse.
(The name is derived from this nursery rhyme as it refers to the 'sneezing' said to be associated with the onset of the Black Death).
