Part of a QEII National Trust convenant <www.nationaltrust.org.nz/>. It is an ecological and landscape gem protecting a deep water lake and secondary beech / podocarp forest. The covenanted area is 284 hectares, which includes the lake plus surrounding bush. This magnificent forest and lake setting can be enjoyed via either a lakeside or ridge track. Allow up to 90 minutes return. The tracks are well-graded but bring your walking shoes.
Directions to get here: Wellington to Lake Pounui takes about 90 minutes. Featherston to Lake Pounui takes about 30minutes ( 34 Kms ). Use the Western Lake Rd, which is sign-posted from State Highway 2 at the Rimutaka Hill end of Featherston township. This scenic road is sealed but narrow, and therefore care is required.
