CRESSON, a village in section 36 of Altona Township, was originally surveyed in September 1885 as Altoona with a plat of 14 blocks. The first business was a grain warehouse built by Ezra Rice in 1885; Alex McNaughton built a general store in his farm home in February 1894, and the post office of Altoona was established, closing in 1896. By 1910, the village was known as Cresson after the station of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad; maps variously show the site as Altoona, Altona, and Cresson.
