WILNO, a village in section 23 of Royal Township, was primarily settled by Poles and was platted on February 10, 1883, with most streets named for Polish cities or heroes. The village was named for the second city, Vilnius, or Wilnius, of old Poland, now the capital of Lithuania. Two post offices were established; the first, 1883-1901, was transferred to Ivanhoe; the second operated 1902-4. The Church of St. John Cantius was built as a wooden church about 1882, was replaced in 1902 with a brick building, and was known as the "Cathedral in the Cornfield," in reference to its location in this center of Polish-American farming.
