Constructed in 1866 to link the old town centre to the north with new areas to the south while providing access to the docks for the railway. In 1877 the bridge was widened to its current road width of 40.24 metres. Until 1932 when the Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened this structure had the distinction of being the widest bridge in the southern hemisphere.
