Southdown is a natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle gas turbine plant that generates up to 175MW of electricity and also produces steam for use by local industries. As the only fossil-fuel plant belonging to Mighty River Power, it provides flexibility to offset low flows at that company's several hydroelectric stations.
