The following is a map of the alternative service - road construction performed by Doukhobors during the Second World War. Seventy young Doukhobor men - conscientious objectors - registered for four months of alternative service in lieu of military service under the National War Service Regulations. They were interned at a work camp near Montreal Lake, Saskatchewan. There, between June 29 and October 29, 1941, they constructed 67.2 kilometers (41.7 miles) of road on Highway No. 969, connecting Prince Albert and La Ronge, Saskatchewan. Highlighted is the southern, initial terminus of the Doukhobor road construction project; marked above are the two work camp locations as well as the northern, final terminus of the Doukhobor road construction project.
