The area between historical Lalbagh Fort and Mosque of Khan Mohammad Mridha was previously known as Atoshkana area. Now the name exists in the name of a narrow lane only connecting Jagannath Saha road and Lalbabagh roed.
The area was of great importance during Mughal rule as they established fort's ordnance factory (Atish- means fire in farsi) here and stationed a strong artillery unit. But, some historians refer the name came from the group of Parsis living here and their temple where fire kept lit through out year. Historian Hekim Habibur Rahman in his book 'Asudgan-e-dhaka' mentioned about the existence of Parsi community, temple and cemetery in the area.
