During the period of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb his son Azam Khan became the Subahder of Bengal(1677-79). He chose this place as the residential quarters of bureaucrats, high officials and scholarly persons. The area was named after him. According to some historians the area was named after the grandson of Aurangzeb subahder Azim-us-Shan during (1697-1703). The literal meaning of Azimpur is neighborhood.

With the fall of Muslim power in Bengal, Azimpur was fallen from grace. During British rule there was a small neighborhood, Daira sharif, West End High School and Sir Salimullah Orphanage in the east. The area had plenty of mango trees and few open spaces in between. This area was also known as Amla-para.

After partition in 1947, the area was chosen for developing into a residential area for the Govt. officials. Large number of block of flats were built here for Govt officers and intellectuals.
