Cape Chirakman - Port of Kavarna (Kavarna)

Bulgaria / Dobric / Kavarna

Cape Chirakman is one of the symbols of Kavarna. It is 3 km south from Kavarna, like a beautiful ending of a pretty valley, through which passes the way from the town to the the harbour and the sea. Right here, over the even and almost inaccessible Chirakman plateau, intensive life had existed for thousands of years.
During the Hellenic period a powerful Thracian-Greek colony was founded. It was called Bizone and kept in touch with the other colonies along the Black Sea coast. During 1st century BC a powerful earthquake splits the cape and a great part of it sinks into the sea. This fact still arouses the interest of the tourists. During the 4th century a bulky fortified wall is erected. It protected the town from the numerous Barbaric attacks.
This wall is reconstructed and is of interest to tourists.
The basilica also dates from the same time. It was discovered as a result of intense archaeological research.
The medieval town emerged on the remains of the big fortress from the Early Byzantine period and it turns into a crafts centre.
The final conquering of the Dobrudzha lands by the Turks (end of 14th century) led to the full destruction of Chirakman and its inhabitants migrated to the territory of the present town.
