Permanently moored over the deepest part of Seneca Lake, the Seneca Lake Sonar Test Facility is the primary active instrument calibration and testing facility for the US Navy. Operational year-round conducting subsurface sonar and acoustic experiments in the deep-water thermoclines of Seneca Lake, the facility is equipped with a 220 ton capacity derrick crane designed to deploy large test fixtures such as bow sonar domes for surface ships and submarines as well as large towed bodies.
The facility operates as part of the Naval Sea Systems Command.
