The first day of July 1965 will always be written in “Golden Letters” in the history of Jayankondam because it was on this day; a New School for girls alone was established in this famous town. The People of this historical town and the surrounding villages within a radius of twenty miles felt the urgent need of the time to have a Girls’ High School in this town and with the permission of His Excellency the right Rev. Paul Arul Samy D.D. The Bishop of Kumbakonam, approached the very Rev. Mother superior (Mother Francois) of the Salesian Missunaries sisters of Mary Immaculate to take up the case at hand. These nuns with Rev. Sr. Marie Andre’s lead courageously took up the great task of running this new girls’ High school in this educationally backward area, in spite of their numerous financial difficulties. The Fatima Girls School enjoys a long history of toil and achievements, ups and downs in its journey. Rev. Sr. Marie Andre was the first correspondent of the school and selvi. Victoria Joseph the first Headmistress. The school was started in a small hut with three Sec. Grade teachers Mrs. Evelin Jeyaraj, Miss. Sathya Bama and Miss Christaniammal. Along with one Tamil pundit and Drawing Teacher. At the beginning there were only88 students. By the continuous visit to families and different villages the strength of the students was on the increase.
The ‘Fatima’ is a land mark in the educational history of Jayankondam.
