Site of a WW2 coastal defence battery, part of a ring of fortifications collectively known as "Fremantle Fortress".
The largest battery on Garden Island, it was fitted with 2 x 9.2-inch MkX guns. The same guns were fitted to the Oliver Hill Battery on Rottnest Island.
A complex of underground tunnels and rooms were completed, included shell stores, magazines, pump chamber and power house, plotting room and command post and battery observation posts.
Building began in 1943, but the battery wasn't completed before the threat of attack receded and resources were allocated elsewhere. The battery and its guns were placed in reserve, and was decommissioned in 1963.
