Second World War 1939-1945, water, battlefield, shipwreck
During the Second World War, this body of water was the site of The Battle of Savo Island, Battle of Cape Esperance, Naval Battles of Guadalcanal & the Battle of Tassafaronga during the Guadalcanal Campaign in 1942-43.
Following the numerous bloody conflicts the sound became known as Ironbottom Sound, so named as it is the final resting place for the following vessels and many of their crew members:
