RAAF airfield constructed during WW2 as a fighter base to protect Melbourne and Yallourn (power stations) from air attack.

A total of four runways were planned, but this was reduced to two gravel strips, with construction beginning at the end of 1942.

  • This former airfield is now being talked about as a possible site for a third airport for Melbourne.
  • I thought the 3rd airport is proposed for Tooradin Airfield.
  • It is funny how some of our elected leaders pick up a WW2 gravel runway and think it is a good building block for a modern Jet airport. In reality if an airport of that scale was built at either Tooradin or here they would start with a bulldozer and fresh plans.
  • ...and an active railway line to connect to.
