The Arc de Triomphe is a monument in Paris that stands in the centre of the Place de l'Étoile, at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. It is the linchpin of the historic axis (L'Axe historique) leading from the courtyard of the Louvre Palace, a sequence of monuments and grand thoroughfares on a route leading out of Paris. The monument's iconographic program pitted heroically nude French youths against bearded Germanic warriors in chain mail and set the tone for public monuments with triumphant nationalistic messages until World War I.
To access the viewing platform on the top of the arc, take the underground pathway and go to the ticket booth. Bear in mind that under 18's go free. Continue to the stairs (Worth the 284 stair climb!) and you will enter a mezzanine with benches and toilets. Continue upstairs for the museum and giftshop, then continue up for the viewing platform. Look out southward for the Eiffel Tower, and look to the west for La Grande Arche de La Defense. There is also a lift, but you'll have to ask very nicely to use it, as it is designed for the handicapped.
