In the early 1900s a rich copper mine was discovered here. Mine owners built a complete town that eventually housed 2700 people. There was a large mine, a copper smelter, a coke plant, and all the facilities of a modern town. When the Great Depression hit, everything closed down, and a forest fire destroyed the town in 1942. All that remains are the powerplant building, some foundations and smokestacks.

The hydro dam nearby is being refurbished to produce power once again for our electronic age appetite for electricity, and recently exploration has resumed around the mine site to look for more orebodies. Meanwhile, the old smelter slag pile extending out into the inlet has been quarried for use as a sandblasting abrasive. Its primary user is the US Navy which uses the abrasive to clean hulls of its nuclear submarine fleet.
