The Newark Works are the only surviving works of Stothert & Pitt Ltd a company that once dominated Bath and the south bank of the river Avon,they built cranes to be exported all over the Empire and the world.
Stothert & Pitt also produced water pumping engines, iron lighthouses, mini-submarines, concrete mixers, quarry crushing and screening plant. The middle and right hand photos show Stotherts cranes at Bristol Harbour and they are part of the Bristol City Museum, the steam crane is in working condition and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
