Located on the site of the former Chantier Navals de Caen, which was established in 1917 by the French Government to construct ships for the war effort. The shipyard closed in 1954.

In 1956 a new plant employing 550 workers, produced 12 trucks a day for Saviem, later to become a part of Renault, which in turn became a division of Volvo in 2010. The factory is the largest employer in the region with 1,980 employees assembling all Renault heavy trucks and the Midlum mid-weight truck.
