The ruins at Tell Jokha (Tall Ǧūḫah) were originally identified as the ancient Sumerian city of Umma, then with Gisha or Kissa (Gišša), and the issue remains debated.

A recent reassessment by Almamori Haider Oraibi suggests that the name and capital of the polity (Gišša) originally applied to Umm al-ʿAqārib, and was transferred to Tell Jokha by the Ur III period, after Umm al-ʿAqārib had been abandoned and the polity's center was relocated to Tell Jokha. Almamori Haider Oraibi accordingly identifies Umm al-ʿAqārib as the original Gišša, and Tell Jokha as Umma, which was subsequently also called Gišša by the Ur III and later periods.

Its major temple was probably dedicated to the worship of the god Shara.
