Castle built by Walter L'Espec, Lord of Helmsley, in the early 12th Century. L'Espec stumped up the readies to help found two local monastic institutions: Rievaulx Abbey (a Cistercian house) and Kirkham Priory (an Augustinian house) -- both of which are worth the visit.

Castle is open to the public and is in the care of English Heritage.
