Constructed circa 1939, the camp was requisitioned by the government during the 2nd World war to be used as military bases, as were the 2 other Butlins camps at Skegness and Clacton. After the war half of the camp was reopened to holidaymakers on 2nd June 1945. The camp was closed by Butlins at the end of the 1983 season even though the company had been revamping ready for the 1984 season. A lot of the camp features though long ago demolished can still be easily spotted from the air.
