Tapovan, Gangotri Glaciers, Himalayas - Garhwal
Tapovan a place only meant to eperience was named after Tapovanji Maharaj during the British Rule by the Britishers.
Sw. Tapovanji Maharaj also known as the Himavat Vibhooti(Glory of the Himalayas) had helped the Britishers Map this Himalayan Reigion as he was well versed in the Skandh Puran, hence the Britishers in order to honour him named this peice of land after him which he would often visit and reside in.
He would travel on bare foot and visit all the holy places in this glorious Himalayan Region and also travelled upto Kailash Masarovar through these mountainious region.

(Such bizarre story, Who concocted this. FYI= Tap means meditation and Van means pasture/ feild. Name Tapovan is in existance since The Ramayan. The place is a plateau on the left bank of the glacier, Nandanban being on the left.)

If the SOURCE of a River is considered as the point from where its waters first start flowing, FARTHEST distance from the Sea; then TAPOVAN should be considered the GEOGRAPHICAL SOURCE of the River Bhagirathi = GANGA ( based on and as shown in the “GANGES” programme on DISCOVERY CHANNEL = October 2007); as it is from here, that the first water droplets start trickling down to form the flowing waters of the Bhagirathi.

A marvellous place to visit though trekking to this place after Gaumukh is not easy. But I liked the place on reaching there on watching surrounding Glaciers and a small waterbody.
