Augustinian house founded 1139. Raised to abbey status 1148. Razed to the ground 1539 (by Henry VIII and his henchmen). Noted for its impressive gatehouse which still stands. A good fragment of the chapter house remains. In the care of English Heritage: open to the public www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/ConProperty.386
