Avadi (Tamil: ஆவடி) is a town and a municipality in Thiruvallur district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Avadi is an acronym for "Armoured Vehicles and Ammunition Depot of India". Situated about 23 km north west of Chennai, it is surrounded by major defence establishments.

History:

There was a vintage World War-II airfield at Red Hills, Sholavaram. This was approachable from the junction close to the CRPF Camp, Avadi, immediately after the Military Hospital. Earlier, it also had a rail link from Avadi passing through Pattabhiram secondary station, PTMS and PTMS E-Depot. Presently this rail line extension terminates at PTMS. Sholavaram was famous for motor sport activities until 1988. Motor racing was discontinued here when the new race course began operations at Irungattukottai, near Sriperumbudur. Sholavaram was used in the infant stages of Indian motor racing by the Madras Motor Sports Club. During its heyday, the Maharaj Kumar of Gondal, Karivardhan, Vijay Mallya and others used to race here.

Karumari Amman temple is a very famous temple in Avadi. In addition to this many old generation temples are also present in and around Avadi.

Thirumullaivoyal, a locality near Avadi is famous for an ancient temple of Lord Shiva.

  • AVADI is a pure tamil name. aa+adi= aavadi. aa means cow ( aavin milk )adi means benith the meaning is cattle place. rail adi railway station. theradi place of car stand of hindu temples.
  • Armoured Vehicles and Ammunition Depot of India = AVADI
  • Does the name come from the acronym (see Satish) or the Tamil? There was a British base here during the Second World War (not only in the 60s as the Wikipedia entry says) , giving rise to the acronym explanation . Somebody must know whether Avadi was called Avadi before that base was set up, mustn't they?
  • According to the noted historian Sriram, AVADI cannot be an acronym for Armoured Vehicles and Ammunition Depot of India. He claims to have noticed the place 'Avadi' in a gazette of the 1880s. He also adds Defence establishments started only in the 1940. Hence the acronym need not be correct. The place must have been a huge cow shelter or a goshala (Aavu (Aa = Cow )+ Chavadi = Avadi the most probable portmanteau!
