The United States Air Force Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) was the first operational ballistic missile detection radar. Site II at Clear AFS began construction in August 1958, with a counterpart facility at Thule Air Base in Greenland beginning construction two years later. IOC at Clear was in September 1959 and the system came online officially in 1960. With Thule coming online in late 1960 the BMEWS went fully operational under the Aerospace Defense Command. Transferred to the Strategic Air Command in October 1979 and subsequently the Space Command in 1982, Site II remained fully operational through the mid-1990s when the aging equipment was replaced by a new Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS) went online.
