The medieval stronghold of Manzikert/Mantzikert, Armenian Manazkert, and later Turkish Malazgirt. The town and fortress was an important strategic and economic center throughout the Middle Ages. The battle between the Eastern Roman emperor Romanos IV Diogenes and the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan was fought in the vicinity in 1071.
