OF PARISH WARDS: 12 PARISH NEWSLETTER: Ekvott (Quarterly) HISTORY: Udupi was originally a part of the Mount Rosary church, Kallianpur. In 1879, the Tahashildar, Nicolas Britto, along with Jacob Alva and Philip Fernandes requested the Bishop for a church at Udupi. Bishop Nicholas Pagani sj by a decree of November 26, 1880 opened a chapel here dedicated to Our Lady of Dolours. It was served from Kallianpur. The church had 1.52 acres of land. It was constituted an independent parish by Bishop Pagani in 1890, with Fr J.M. Masse as the first parish priest. Fr Casimir Menezes (1913-1932) constructed the church which was blessed by Bishop Perini S.J. on February 8, 1918. Fr Denis Sequeira (1932-1941) had new altar of teakwood made. Fr Alexander B. Pinto erected an open-air stage and grotto. Fr Gaulbert Noronha (1957-1969) built the Don Bosco Hall and the L shaped shopping complex. The church celebrated its centenary in 1980 and foundation for the new church was laid by Bishop Basil D’Souza on November 24, 1980. Fr Joseph Peter Tauro, the 20th parish priest of Udupi, constructed the new diamond shaped church building and it was blessed by the Bishop on May 17, 1984.
