Belthangady, Karnataka, Apr. 18, 2007, 09.56 Hrs (CBCI News): The newly built St Lawrence Cathedral Church was solemnly inaugurated and dedicated by the Apostolic Nuncio in India, Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana on Apr. 18, 2007 here at Belthangady.
“As a symbol of Christian unity, worship and service, a cathedral church is a veritable house of God. It inspires love, devotion and gratitude,” stated Apostolic Nuncio in India Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana.
Tellicherry Archbishop George Valiamattam presided over the felicitation function.
Archbishop of Bangalore Bernard Moras, Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Archbishop Emeritus of Trichur Jacob Thoomkuzhy and Bishop of Bathery Geevarghese Mar Divansios felicitated the Bishop of Belangady Lawrence Mukhuzhy and the faithful.
“Through inculturation, the Christian religion has endeared itself to the local people and it’s places of worship have become holy places for Indians,” stated the head of the Dharmasthala Temple, Dr Veerendra Heggade.
Union Minister for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes and former Karnataka Chief Minister Verappa Moily also lauded the contribution of Christians to the nation building.
The Diocese of Belthangady was erected by Pope John Paul II on April 24, 1999 as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Thalasserry.
The diocese was established for the Syro-Malabar Catholics of the three districts of Karnataka state, viz, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in Karnataka.
Till the Diocese of Belthangady was established, this region was under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Thalasserry.
Bishop Lawrence Mukkuzhy was appointed the first Bishop of the new diocese on Apr. 24, 1999 and the inauguration of the diocese and the Episcopal ordination of the bishop was held on August 4, 1999
