Hamlet and the only other town in Brown County (other than Nashville) with a post office.

Helmsburg was the nearest rail depot to Nashville in the days before paved roads and automobiles. As Brown County grew as a tourist destination, visitors from Indianapolis was take the train to Helmsburg and then take a carriage or wagon for the 6 mile ride to Nashville.

Helmsburg once boasted more buildings and residents than Nashville. The old Masonic Lodge building, (now the Fig Tree Coffeehouse) remains the only privately-owned multi-story brick building of any size outside of Nashville.

With the improvement of roads into Brown County and the end of passenger rail service after World War II, Helmsburg began a slow decline.
