2905 Garland Avenue. African-American doctor Ossian Sweet's attempt to move into a bungalow located in a white neighborhood caused the neighbors to form a mob in an attempt to remove him and his family on September 9, 1925. Leon Breiner was killed when a shot was fired from the Sweet house, leading to a show trial where he and ten others were defended by Clarence Darrow. The trial resulted in a hung jury, and no further prosecution of Dr. Sweet.
