Discovered by Lt Bligh in 1788 while journeying around the southern part of New Zealand on his way to Tahiti to collect breadfruit which ultimately led to the subsequent mutiny. He did not land since the islands were almost totally barren and devoid of plant life although they do host countless numbers of marine animals and sea birds.
The whole chain is only 5 km (3.1 mi) across at its longest axis, and comprises three subgroups, the largest Main Group to the north-west, the Centre Group and the East Group.
