The Mentawai Islands are a group of islands geographically located in the Indian Ocean and administratively part of the province of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The Mentawai Islands are located on the western side of the province of West Sumatra. The indigenous people of Mentawai have a different culture from the Minangkabau people because they are separated by the sea.
The Mentawai Islands have four large islands, namely:
• Siberut Island
• Sipora Island
• North Pagai Island
• South Pagai Island
and several small islands.

In the Mentawai Islands sea area there are several straits, including:
• Mentawai Strait, which is the strait that separates Sumatra Island from the Mentawai Islands
• Siberut Strait, which is the strait that separates Siberut Island from Sipora Island
• Sipora Strait, which is the strait that separates Sipora Island from North Pagai Island
• Sikakap Strait, which is the strait that separates North Pagai Island and South Pagai Island
• Sanding Strait

Since 1999, the Mentawai Islands region has been confirmed as a district called the Mentawai Islands Regency with its capital in Tua Pejat.

Kepulauan Mentawai adalah gugusan pulau-pulau yang secara geografis terletak di Samudera Hindia dan secara administratif masuk ke dalam provinsi Sumatera Barat, Indonesia. Kepulauan Mentawai berada di sisi barat provinsi Sumatera barat. Penduduk asli Mentawai mempunyai kebudayaan yang berbeda dengan penduduk Minangkabau karena tepisah oleh laut.
Kepulauan Mentawai mempunyai empat pulau besar, yakni :
Pulau Siberut
Pulau Sipora
Pulau Pagai Utara
Pulau Pagai Selatan
dan beberapa pulau-pulau kecil.
Di wilayah laut Kepulauan Mentawai ada beberapa selat, antara lain :
Selat Mentawai, yakni selat yang memisahkan Pulau Sumatera dengan Kepulauan Mentawai
Selat Siberut, yakni selat yang memisahkan Pulau Siberut dengan Pulau Sipora
Selat Sipora, yakni selat yang memisahkan Pulau Sipora dengan Pulau Pagai Utara
Selat Sikakap, yakni selat yang memisahkan Pualau Pagai Utara dan Pulau Pagai Selatan
Selat Sanding
Sejak tahun 1999, wilayah Kepulauan Mentawai dikukuhkan menjadi sebuah kabupaten bernama Kabupaten Kepulauan Mentawai dengan ibu kota di Tua Pejat.
