Historic Tritts Higy Mill

Tritts Mill was built in 1836 by Mr. Brewster. Joseph Tritt subsequently acquired the mill and continued producing flour. In 1900, the owner installed an 1898 cider mill and powered it with a wooden waterwheel. In 1911, Joseph Higy purchased the mill. His sons Lee and Charles assumed ownership in 1919, and Lee’s son, Richard, took over in 1960, followed by Terry and Chuck Higy, the fourth generation. For most of the 20th century the mill was home to Higy Hardware. The business specialized in seeds, feeds, fertilizers, farm supplies, paints, garden tools and other hardware. Every fall, mill customers could buy sweet, fresh cider by the glass, gallon or barrel. The apple press produced 17,000 gallons of cider a year. The family even sold their cider nationally. The Higy family shut the mill down in 1998 after 164 years of operation. Local attorney John Daily purchased the mill in 2008 and sudivied it into 3 suites. In 2021 local couple Alanna Barker and Scott Overholt purchased the mill and they now operate the Retro Attic Akron collectibles shop within the mill. Retro Attic Akron sells movies, TV shows, video games, clothing, sporting goods, and other collectibles.
