mill, historic landmark, manufacturing

From just south of the Amoskeag Falls to Granite Street once stood the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, what was once the largest mill complex in the world. It operated from the July 1, 1831 until Christmas Eve, 1935, when the company filed for bankruptcy. At its greatest extent, the mills covered 137 acres along each bank of the river. Today, several of the mills are gone, but many remain, much of which is protected in five districts (four districts on the east banks, and Mill #11 on the west) by the National Register of Historic Places. The mills today are home to a variety of industries, including UNH Manchester, several major companies, the Millyard Museum, a Jillian's Billiard Hall, and other companies.
