Penteskouphi Castle

Greece / Korinthia / Arkhaia Kyrinthos /
castle, archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages

The castle of Penteskouphi was built by the Crusaders in 1205 to help them control access to Acrocorinth, which they were besieging. After their conquest of Acrocorinth in 1209, the strategic importance of Penteskouphi declined, although the castle was maintained, for example by the Venetians. During the Greek Revolution in 1821, Penteskouphi was seized by the Greeks as part of their effort to besiege and take Acrocorinth. The castle is small but relatively well-preserved.
