During World War II this camp held several thousand prisoners, mainly Italians captured in North Africa, but also some Germans.
The prisoners were put to use in harvesting crops and working in local war industries given the shortage of civilian workers. The camp conditions were reported to be good, there were no reported attempts to escape.
Almost all of the prisoners requested the chance to stay in America after the war rather than return to war-ravaged Europe, but they were all sent home.
